Escrow systems are the financial backbone of trustworthy anonymous marketplace operations. They solve a fundamental problem: how do two parties with no legal recourse trust each other in a transaction? The answer is a trusted third party — the marketplace — holding funds until both sides confirm the transaction was completed honestly.
How Standard Escrow Works
When a buyer places an order, the cryptocurrency payment is held in a platform-controlled wallet rather than sent directly to the vendor. The vendor sees the payment confirmed and ships the order. The buyer receives the order and releases the payment, which is then sent to the vendor minus the platform fee. If a dispute arises, the marketplace arbitration team reviews evidence from both parties and determines who receives the funds.
Multisig Escrow: Trustless Security
Advanced platforms implement 2-of-3 multisignature escrow using cryptocurrency's cryptographic capabilities. A 2-of-3 multisig means three parties each hold one key, and any two keys together can authorize a transaction. The three parties are: the buyer, the vendor, and the marketplace. On successful transactions, buyer and vendor both sign, releasing funds without platform involvement. On disputes, the marketplace joins either buyer or vendor to authorize the resolution — but the platform can never unilaterally steal funds because it holds only one of three required keys.
Finalize Early (FE) Risks
Some vendors request buyers to Finalize Early — releasing payment before the order is confirmed received. This bypasses escrow protection entirely and is a significant scam risk, especially from newly registered vendors. Never FE with unestablished vendors regardless of offered discounts.
The Vendor Bond System
Vendors deposit a security bond (typically –500 equivalent in cryptocurrency) which is returned when they leave the platform. This bond acts as insurance: a vendor who scams loses their bond immediately, creating a financial disincentive that, combined with reputation consequences, maintains vendor accountability.
